Project name:

GV 8 Electrified urban commercial vehicles integration with fast charging infrastructure

Status: Idea
Creation date: 03-11-2016

Project objectives:

The project idea is to focus on the development of an integrated charging infrastructure for trucks within municipalities. The starting point of this project is focused on small to medium duty trucks, but the option to include busses is also explored. This requires a careful balance between:

  • The smart charging infrastructure, such as the grid of fast-charging stations, night charging stations, power net, converter, potentially local power storage;
  • Truck drive trains tailored for the specific use cycle (which leads to a cycle specific balance between e-motors, power management, and battery packs);

An example where this is already applied is the bus infrastructure set up in Eindhoven. The busses are charged in the garage and are charged during their trips via fast charging. The fast charging is integrated in the operations of the bus line systems in such a way that traveler services are not compromised.

The project idea would be to set up the same kind of project for trucks within municipalities. The distribution process should be aligned with the public transport of the city with respect to the charging infrastructure. This is especially interesting for garbage trucks and delivery services as they have most of their trips within the city limits. In terms of delivery services a potential user is the food industry as they have regular distribution lines and as well as incidental deliveries. Within the food industry we could approach distributors for supermarkets or of (fast food) restaurants. Attention point is energy usage by auxiliary equipment, especially for garbage trucks. Another potential user of the infrastructure are building companies, as they usually have a lot of deliveries within the cities to their building sites.
