Autonomous vessels are only part of the solution

Autonomous vessels alone won't transform logistics. The real challenge is making them work within an integrated, efficient and economically viable transport system.

This was the key message shared by Michele Vavallo from PNO Innovation at the 1st LOGISTOP Scientific and Technological Congress, held on 7 October 2026 in Valencia, Spain.

Drawing on research and use-case assessments from the Horizon Europe project SEAMLESS, Michele highlighted how autonomous vessels, digital logistics platforms, automated cargo handling and hinterland connections must work together to unlock the full potential of automated waterborne transport.

The findings reveal promising opportunities. In Norway, an autonomous battery-electric maritime shuttle could reduce road freight activity by approximately 87%, generating an estimated €1.91 million in annual operating-cost savings. Meanwhile, autonomous operations along two European inland waterway corridors could enable approximately 7,200 additional TEU of annual transport capacity.

Yet technological potential alone is not enough. Economic viability depends on operational conditions, infrastructure, investment costs and effective integration across the logistics chain.

Through SEAMLESS, PNO Innovation brings its expertise in economic assessment, market analysis and exploitation to evaluate these opportunities and support the transition from research to real-world deployment.

Because the future of autonomous logistics isn't just about smarter technology. It's about making innovation work for the entire supply chain.
