At the Energy Info Days in Brussels a short while ago, the European Commission gave an explanation on the recently published Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2018-2020 for ‘Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy’. The energy transition is one of the most important priorities in this Work Programme. This is underscored by the large grant budget that has been made available. Our experts Marco Gomis and Roel van der Veen collected the latest information for you in Brussels.
Energy transition number 1 priority
The Work Programme ‘Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy’ for 2018-2020 is meant to utilise the innovative force of the EU to achieve the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement and last year’s Energy Plan of the European Union. The innovation must contribute to a CO2 neutral and climate resilient Europe in the second half of this century. With a 3.3 billion euro budget, the energy transition is the most important priority within this Work Programme. Special attention is paid to energy saving in the construction sector and the role of digitalisation in the energy transition. Energy saving in construction sector Energy saving in the construction sector is one of the largest challenges in the energy transition. Especially the energy-efficient renovation of buildings and financing thereof have caught the attention of the European Commission. A good example of a successful application is PNO’s own project BuildInterest, in which project developers and investors in the sustainable construction business are united.
Digitalisation within energy transition
Another important subject on the rise within the Horizon 2020 grant programme is digitalisation within the energy transition. Think of, for example, projects surrounding the possibilities of smart measurements, smart grids and the usage of Big Data. In the calls for proposals, we can also see the chances these innovations offer for a more active role of citizens.
Calls for proposals opened
The first nine calls for proposals within the energy transition opened on 31 October. They included three interesting calls for energy innovation in the construction sector:
- LC-SC3-RES-4-2018: Renewable energy system integrated at the building scale
- LC-SC3-RES-5-2018: Increased performance of technologies for local heating and cooling solutions
- LC-SC3-RES-6-2018: Demonstrate significant cost reduction for Building Integrated PV (BIPV) solutions
Make sure to apply quickly, because these calls will be closing as soon as January and February 2018!
What should you look out for when submitting an application?
First of all, be sure your project is perfectly aligned with one of the calls for proposals. After all, that will increase your project’s chances for success. Also, it is of great importance to form an ideal consortium as soon as possible, because the first deadlines for the energy transition calls are as soon as January and February 2018.
