A new SIMEST funding scheme aimed at supporting investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to open shortly, with a total budget of €200 million. The scheme targets SMEs and large companies based in Italy with an international focus. To be eligible, companies must generate at least 3% of their turnover from exports. Companies operating within an export-oriented supply chain may also apply, even if they do not export directly. The funding will support investments aimed at integrating AI solutions, accelerating digital transformation, and fostering innovation in business processes. Eligible costs will include cloud infrastructure, computing systems, software and AI platforms, as well as expenditure related to training, specialist expertise, consultancy services, certifications and cybersecurity. The incentive combines subsidised financing with a non-repayable grant of up to 10% of eligible costs (under the de minimis regime). An advance payment of up to 50% may be available, while the financing can have a maximum duration of eight years. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from 21 September.
