Sixth Congress of the DataBio Project, Data-driven Bioeconomy

The sixth congress of the DataBio project, Data-driven Bioeconomy, was held from 29 to 30 January 2019 at the Hotel "i Portici" in Bologna, organized by CREA-CI, Bologna office. As witnessed and testified by the project manager and congress organizer, Dr. Ephrem Habyarimana, the event was a great success and saw the participation of over 70 people, including international partners and external stakeholders. The congress was an opportunity to discuss and illustrate the performance of the technological platform of the project, the progress of the experiments (pilot trials) conducted over the last two years across Europe, the plan for the next trials to be run in 2019.

In particular, the CREA-CI of Bologna is the leader of the "Dissemination and Training" Work Package and of the pilots on the monitoring with satellite imageries of the biomass crop species (e.g., sorghum) in Italy, and on the Genomic prediction and selection in tomato crops in Greece. CREA is engaged in the development of algorithms able to predict the production, the phenology, the phytosanitary status of the crops and the crops genetic merit and performance through the genomic prediction and selection technology.
The DataBio project is financed by the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program of the European Union with the grant agreement n. 732064. Thematic: ICT-15-2016-2017; Big Data PPP: Large Scale Pilot actions in sectors best benefitting from data-driven innovation.

The main objective of the DataBio project is to demonstrate the benefits of Big Data technologies in the production of raw materials from agriculture, forestry and fishing/aquaculture in Bio-Economy, to produce food, energy and biomaterials responsibly and sustainably. DataBio proposes to implement the latest generation Big Data platform, through the integration of infrastructures and technologies provided by individual partners: the Big DATABIO platform. The project, active since 2017, is implemented by 48 partners distributed in 18 countries between the EU and Israel. The project has already produced more than 90 Big Data technologies, implemented in 26 pilot studies ranging from agriculture/forestry to fishing/aquaculture. To date, more than 100 associated stakeholders are actively applying DataBio technologies.
