Project name:

A Dutch company is looking for a sustainable alternative for their plastic active pharmaceutical ingredient (=API) packaging

Status: Idea
Creation date: 11-11-2022

Project objectives:

Short summary A Dutch Pharmaceutical company wants to distribute its highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients in a more sustainable packaging. Therefore the company is looking for alternatives for their plastic packaging in the framework of technical cooperation agreement or a license agreement.

Full description This Dutch company has a long history in the production of complex and highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs), spanning over almost 100 years. As the company is actively engaging in sustainability in all areas of their business they now would like to make their active pharmaceutical ingredients (API's) packaging more sustainable. To guarantee the integrity of the API, the packaging is supposed to also protect it from moisture, oxygen and light. The company's APIs are powders. Currently the APIs are packaged in double low-density polyethylene (LDPE) bags places in an High-density polyethylene (HDPE) drum. The company is now looking for a more sustainable solution to replace the HDPE drums.

Technical Specification or Expertise Sought The company is looking for the following properties from the packaging: • The packaging solution must facilitate API portions from ~5 grams (smaller packages) to ~20 kg (larger packages) per container (bulk density ~0.5 g/ml). • The moisture and oxygen throughput rates should be similar or lower than those of the currently used HDPE drums. • The smaller packages are used for stability studies. The purpose of the studies is to demonstrate with the smaller packages that the API in the larger package remains intact, throughout its whole storage period (typically 60 months). This means that the moisture and oxygen throughput per gram of API must be comparable for the large and small packages. This is the real challenge! Currently the smaller packages are placed in aluminum pouches to achieve comparability. • The packaging must be easy to handle to avoid contamination of operators or environment. • The larger, bulk API storage containers must be stackable. • The packaging must be suited for placing a tamper evident seal on it. • Due to the minimal risk for contamination of the packaging with API, the packaging cannot be reusable.
