Project name:

Turkish Company Seeks Partners for Eureka Consortium to Develop Eco-Friendly Magnetic Cleaning Gels for Effective Historical Surface Restoration and Protection

Status: Idea
Creation date: 25-08-2023

Project objectives:

Short summary This project consists in developing magnetic cleaning gels (MCG) that provide effective cleaning and ease of application on historical stone façades and mineral-structured surfaces. The target of the method to be used is cleaning the mineral structured surface without leaving any residue and damage from grime and pollutants like organic compounds or inorganic compounds like petroleum derivatives, smoke particles from wood combustion, biogenic components of aerosols, SOx (sulfur oxide) and NOx.

Full description This project consists in developing magnetic cleaning gels (MCG) that provide effective cleaning and ease of application on historical stone façades and mineral-structured surfaces. The target of the method to be used is cleaning the mineral structured surface without leaving any residue and damage from grime and pollutants like organic compounds or inorganic compounds like petroleum derivatives, smoke particles from wood combustion, biogenic components of aerosols, SOx (sulfur oxide) and NOx (nitrogen oxides). With the intent of conducting an eco-friendly process, the MCG to be developed within the scope of the project will be synthesized with natural polymers obtained from renewable energy sources such as cellulose ethers derivates, chitosan. Waste products obtained after cleaning will be subjected to a double recycling process. Once the cleaning gels need to be discarded, the ferro-magnetic particles in the structure will be separated and reused, and the waste gel will be used as a raw material in various building materials like putty, plasters, coatings, flooring, concrete fillers/additives. In this way, we ensure a circular product with eco-friendly properties in terms of synthesis and application process, and at the same time, long-term cleaning and protection of the applied historical surfaces will be achieved.

Advantages and innovations The project aims to develop a new nanomagnetic gel structure with a high cleaning capacity and to present an innovative approach for its application on hard-to-reach surfaces. Using the benefits of nanotechnology in the product's field of application, magnetic properties will be added to cleaning gels, allowing effective cleaning of hard-to-reach surfaces without any contact.

Technical Specification or Expertise Sought Optimization and process scaling of magnetic polymeric gels or technological validation of final prototypes
