Project name:

UK-based SME with digital platform to prevent medication errors looking for partners for Eurostars application

Status: In Preparation
Creation date: 04-08-2021

Project objectives:

Summary
A UK-based SME is developing an ICT platform which eliminates medication errors, which harm patients and incurs costs for care homes and hospitals. The SME is looking at submitting a funding proposal to Eurostars for further development for commercialisation and is looking for academic and / or industrial partners to provide knowledge of drug administration processes and needs of care homes and hospitals to feed into this project. The partnership will be a research cooperation agreement.

Description
Errors in administering medication to patients in hospital and care homes cause harm to thousands of patients annually and even result in death. Errors, predominantly due to human error, manual paper-based processes and caused by staff interruptions, lack of training, under-staffing and more.

The most common types of errors range from drug adverse reactions, wrong patient, wrong medicine, wrong frequency, wrong dose, wrong route, expired drug, medications contra-indicated for patient. Reducing these errors will save lives and prevent harm to patients, reduce operational and legal costs for Hospitals and Care Homes.

A UK-based SME is developing a solution that aims to eliminate medication errors by simplifying the drug administration process with a reliable, secure, fast and easy to use mobile ICT platform for staff to use during drug administration.

This platform identifies, combines, accurate information of patients, prescribed medication and 3rd party regulated data sources. The technology identifies accurately information of patients and medicines, correct dosages are automatically calculated, it sends alerts and reminders so doses are not missed or given twice and keeps the medicine inventory and patient treatment records updated. This platform will be developed for mobile technology making it accessible, secure, fast and easy to use for hospital and care home staff.

The UK SME is looking to further develop this platform for feasibility studies, onto the commercialisation stage and is looking for partners for a Eurostars proposal to enable this development. They are looking for partners to build a consortium for this proposal. Specifically they are looking for partners with expertise in drug administration in hospital and care home settings. The partnership is envisaged as a research cooperation agreement.

Advantages & innovations
The UK SME's platform has the following advantages: Simplifies workflow processes by digitalising tasks in medicine administration. Accurately identifies the patient and the prescribed medicine. Mobile technology accessible for staff whilst conducing activities. Enables drug dosage calculations which reduces errors. Immediate alerts of potential drug adverse reaction/event. Immediate alerts of incorrect medicines, incorrect patient, expired drug, incorrect dose or time. Reminders for medicine doses. Reliable information combined about patients, medicines and 3rd party regulated data sources Regulated Medicine information available for staff and patients via the mobile.

Partner sought
The UK SME is looking for partners for a Eurostars proposal. In particular they are looking for partners from industry or academia / research that have expertise in drug administration in care homes and / or hospital settings. The UK SME is looking to this partner to provide knowledge about the current workflows used in these settings and information about the carer / nurses' requirements in regards to drug administration. The UK SME is also looking for the partner to provide experience in conducting feasibility studies in order to test and measure the effectiveness of the new technology compared to standard existing methods. The partnership will take the form of a research cooperation agreement.
