LIFE ReRoad

Status: Concluded
Creation date: 07-05-2020

Project objectives:

The massive scale production of plastics and the constantly increased use of plastic products worldwide has placed the disposal of plastic wastes into a serious environmental problem. In addition, the growth of construction industry has led to considerable increased generation of Construction and Demolition Wastes which is considered to be an unsustainable activity that causes serious deterioration of the environment.

The utilization of plastic wastes as well as of the Construction and Demolition Wastes (CDW) as ingredients in hot asphaltic mixtures for paving urban roads and pavements aims to mitigate the environmental impact that comes from the inadequate and uncontrolled disposal of those waste materials.

The main objective of this proposal is to use a) the recycled plastic waste as asphalt binder alternative to bitumen and b) the Construction and Demolition Wastes as aggregates in the asphaltic mixture. This way, a cheaper, longer lasting (extended service life) and durable asphalt compared to the conventional will be achieved, and also, the wastes (plastics and CDW) will turn from a threat to the environment into a valuable resource, leading to sustainability.
