James Cogan from PNO Consultants has been invited to present on the topic ‘Creating new market for biobased products through public procurement’ at the Roundtable ‘Removing barriers within the internal market for the Bioeconomy. The meeting is organized by MEP Lambert van Nistelrooij (PPE) with the support of the newly established European BioEconomy Alliance (EBA), and will be held in Brussels at the European Parliament on the 20th April 2015.

The BIO-MIMETIC project is generating a new class of novel bio-derived polymers for application in household products via extraction of natural compounds from renewable resources. BIO-MIMETIC is now in the third year of activities, several results have obtained: Lignin has been extracted from a range of plant sources, enzymes transforming lignin for use in consumer products have been expressed and computer simulations aimed to study lignin derivatives in solution have been carried out. Industrial Biotechnology (IB) has been identified as one of the key enabling technologies which can drive European competitiveness in the coming decades and help develop a more sustainable and resource-efficient Europe. However, major hurdles hamper the full exploitation of IB. These include access to feedstock and financing, low public awareness of the benefits of IB products, a lack of incentives and various technological constraints.

The European Commission highlighted the importance of research and innovation (R&I) investments and reforms for economic recovery in the European Union, and made proposals to help EU Member States maximise the impact of their budgets at a time when many countries still face spending constraints.

This edition also looks at the impact of the crisis and the difficult recovery on long-term structural trends.
